topSTUNTZ.com is a community based site built around members shared interest for a common sport.
The site is currently available for cheerleading, artistic gymnastics, tumbling, trampolining and parkour. Members can upload videos of their own skills, provide tutorials and rate others. Find out all about the idea behind topSTUNTZ.com below.
The initial concept

The original idea came from a discussion about how we could rate everyone's stats and attributes within the different sections of cheerleading to provide some sort of profile for the competitive athletes about their skills and competition history.

We liked the idea but realised there had to be some sort of standardised way to allocate stats that were fair for everyone. We immediately thought of videos, everyone loves filming videos of themselves learning new skills, then posting them onto facebook or youtube. Athletes could post their videos onto a profile and the rest of the community would decide whether the skill video was accepted or rejected, then rate the execution. This quickly proved problematic so a rethink was required, it was decided that selected moderators could more quickly, fairly and accurately approve or reject videos, then assign each one a 'moderated' execution score which would be subject to change based on the communities rating.

Whilst constructing the site, the original ideas changed and developed, additional functions were added and the site evolved into something with a lot more possibilities than just rating each others skills. The ability to set up and join your competitive team group, video tutorials for learning skills provided by the experts, rankings, team analysis, video competitions and fun applications are some of the things built into the site.
How it works

Within the competitive sections; each uploaded video has its initial status set as 'Pending', these pending videos are received by moderators who can then change their status to 'Approved' or move them to the relevent section depending on whether the content matches what it's supposed to and the skill is executed to the required standard to count. When the status of a video is changed to approved, the users overall stats are updated to reflect the new skills. The community are able to rate the videos execution as soon as it's uploaded, these ratings will only take account when the video is approved.

The sport is broken down into different categories in which each athlete can obtain a score based on the difficulty of skill they demonstrate in each one. A scoring system is used to assign each possible skill (within each category) a level using the fairest and most logical algorithm. As the difficulty increases, the level assigned to the skill increases. Once approved the skill level is reflected in the athletes overall stats.

Members are able to upload a range of other videos to their profile within the non-competitive sections, these videos do not have a status associated with them.

Other sports

The concept of a competitive ranking system based on user video submissions is mainly being trialled on cheerleading. Cheerleading is a sport that is mainly team based and it's difficult to recognise individual skill. topSTUNTZ provides a way of breaking cheerleading down to the individual level. There are however a number of other sports that could be represented in a similar way, using the same platform. We hope to expand this concept to a number of other sports, initially tumbling and parkour. If you would like to see your sport on topSTUNTZ.com please get in contact.
